The European wildwater Championships kicked off on Wednesday 25 August. Competitors from the juniors and U23 took part in the start of the championship. A total of seventeen European countries are taking part in the race. The majority countries in this sport, such as the Czech Republic, France, Germany and Italy, are among the absolute world leaders. The Czech team has a total of thirty-four representatives.
The last championship took place two years ago in Banja Luka, Bosnia. Last year, the championship was canceled because of coronavirus pandemic. A year passed and the championship could begin. "The championship track is not hard. I've paddled on this course many times. It's all about strong and speed. Right line is not the most important thing in this race. It is important to kick the boat at the start and hold on to the finish. The winner will be the one who does not make big mistakes, will be calm and his ride will have a "drive", comments the local track Slovenian coach Maks Francheškin.
At the beginning of the European Championships, was a long race race. The approximately seventeen-minute track tested the best racers. "Although it is a less technically demanding track, it is longer and physically really strenuous. The decisive factor will be the physical side of the competitor and also the adaptation to the weather, which is here. A long descent is a lot about the head and the psychic. It will be difficult, but it will be worth it! ”Adds Matějíček.
Junior Matyáš Novák (Cayenne) dominated in the most numerous category of kayakers. After the start of the European Slalom Championship, he also participated in the wildwater championship. The start in the second discipline was good for him and Novák finished for his first gold metal. "I believed in myself before the race. I wanted to improve my mood after the European Slalom Championships, and I succeeded. I was completely exhausted at the finish. It was definitely the hardest race in my life, "says Novák.
On a kayak, this time in women, Tereza Kneblová (Cayenne) did well and finishing for a bronze medal on a kayak. She entered the race once again, this time on C1 (Limax). The long track was goof for her and Terka became the new European champion in this category. "After the first race, I was full of energy. The result probably kicked me in the second race, in which I managed to win. I really did not expect such successes. The finish line was soo hard. I didn't know if I could make it at all, but I didn't want to let go. I am completely exhausted, but even more satisfied, "adds Kneblová.
The post of current European champions was defended by the pair Petr Šmakal - František Salaj (Sparrow). František had his second race. He turned two starts into two medals. He finished second in singles. "We have confirmed the title and national team colleagues will be on the steps with us. There is huge competition in the Czech Republic, which is also reflected in the international results. It can be seen that this sport is really at a high level. Today, I am not only proud of our performance, but also of all the results that the Czech team has achieved, "comments Šmakal, a member of the winning crew.
The favorite of the Italian national team is the competitor Cecilie Panatová. The talented competitor won a golden double in a long descent. She won the competition of kayakers (U23) (Cayenne). One gold was not enough for her and she also showed the winning ride on C1 (Hawk).
The representative from Switzerland will be able to proudly sing the national anthem. Kayaker Linuz Bozeran (Sicario) showed a flawless ride and won his first European title. Belgian rider Kilian Meersmans (Tonga) finished second. "I didn't believe it, but then I realized it. It is amazing to racing in an international competition with top kayakers. I am proud I can represent our country - Switzerland. I think I can motivate competitors from small countries that if they train hard, they will get in front of the wildwater superpowers. Be strong and "kick the waves!" Says the new champion, Linuz Borezan.
The championship is exactly halfway through. The program of the European race continues tomorrow's qualifying sprint races. The medals will be fought in Saturday's sprint final, which will be followed by a team race.
